LANDI KOTAL: The security forces claimed on Tuesday to have killed 24 more militants on the eighth day of the ongoing military operation in Bara.
The media cell of the Frontier Corps in Jamrud said in a statement that two ‘headquarters,’ two hideouts and two vehicles of militants were destroyed by helicopter shelling in Kamarkhel and Zawah areas.
Four security personnel suffered minor injuries and a vehicle was damaged when a roadside bomb was set off while their convoy was passing through Nala-Malikdinkhel.
A bridge near Kohi chowk was damaged by an explosion.
Some Lashkar-i-Islam activists clashed with security personnel near the Agency Bridge. The bullet-riddled body of a teenaged activist of the group, Sheenak, was found at the place.
Helicopter gunships attacked Lashkar-i-Islam bases and hideouts in Dwa Thoey and Kully Sar areas in Tirah valley.
About 10 rockets landed in open areas near the Landi Kotal army camp and Charbagh post in the evening and security forces fired back.
The Jandakhel tribe handed over to security forces five suspected militants wanted by the administration who had surrendered.
The Bara bazaar partially opened when the curfew was relaxed from 5pm till 8pm.
A local man, Bazaar Gul, told Dawn that a large number of people thronged the bazaar.
He said an exodus of local people towards Peshawar and other safe areas stopped after the market opened.
The traders’ union of the bazaar demanded an extension in the duration of curfew relaxation.
Students of various educational institutions held a protest demonstration against the military operation and demanded an immediate halt to it.
They urged the administration to set up relief camps for the displaced people.
